PRACTICE FOR ALL

Everyone, including complete beginners, are welcome to come and practice at Ashtanga Yoga Jersey. Behind every great Yogi is a story of how they started, so we can’t wait to start this journey with you.

Learning yoga in Mysore-style classes is easy and safe. Everyone is taught individually within a group setting, meaning you can progress at your own pace, receiving personal attention and guidance when you need it. The best way to learn is to commit to attending the Mysore classes a minimum of three times a week.

What to expect At your First class

On your first day you can choose whether you’d like to just observe a class or to start learning. If you choose to observe a class, you’ll get a good idea of what the Mysore-style class looks like and whether it’s the right choice for you.

If you choose to practice, you’ll be invited to the mat and taught how to breathe. During your first class, we’ll typically teach you Surya Namaskar A and the last three poses of the closing sequence. You’ll then be encouraged to repeat this, following your own breath under the teacher’s guidance. Repetition is an important part of learning and intrinsic to spiritual practice.

We’ll encourage you to come back daily, or a minimum of three times a week, and you’ll be taught the sequence slowly, adding asanas one by one over the course of months. If you’re curious and want to get started, please contact Anna to arrange a suitable date and time.

Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga Course

Beginners can also consider attending our Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga Course that we run twice a year, every Spring and Autumn.

Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga

6-week Course

STARTING 10TH MAY 2024

AT 930AM

The focus of this course is to provide an understanding of the Ashtanga Yoga method and set a foundation for what may well become a lifelong yoga journey.

Throughout the course, you will learn and practise Sun Salutations and the fundamental asanas of the Primary Series, the first and the most therapeutic series of the Ashtanga Yoga system. You will learn about tristana: breath, bandha (internal lock), and drishti (gaze), which will help you transform the purely physical practice into an internal experience.

After the 6-week introduction, you will feel more confident to practise yoga at home, or join Ashtanga group classes. You can also expect to experience some benefits of regular yoga practice, including increased strength, stamina, and flexibility, as well as improved breathing and awareness of the breath.

The course starts on Friday 10th of May at 930am and it will run for 6 consecutive weeks with optional break over half-term. Each class will take 75 minutes and will comprise a yoga practice and a brief talk.

In addition, each participant can drop in once a week to the daily Mysore style classes, all at the price of the course. The participation in the morning Mysore-style programme is optional.

With a maximum of eight participants, this course welcomes individuals with no prior experience of yoga or current yoga practitioners wishing to learn Ashtanga.

The course costs £100.
